Hair Loss After Pregnancy
Hair loss after pregnancy or what we call post partum hair loss is often experienced by women who have just given birth. Although it is part of the natural process of pregnancy and giving birth, many women find it very worrisome especially those who experience it the first time. Hair loss after pregnancy does not really cause enough damage to lead to bald spots or complete baldness and only affects about 40-50% of pregnant women.
The peak of hair loss usually takes place three to four months after pregnancy but healthy women usually gain it back and become normal in six to twelve months. Generally speaking, hair loss after pregnancy is caused by the changes of hormone levels in the body of women particularly the estrogen hormones. Ironically, women who are still pregnant experience full and luxuriously growing hair because of the high levels of estrogen.
Here are a few tips in dealing with hair loss after pregnancy:
- Accept it as normal. Healthy hair will grow back as soon as your hormone levels become normal.
- Avoid too harsh combing or brushing. Also avoid very tight ponytails, braids, pigtails and hair rollers which can stress and pull the hair.
- Eat fruits and vegetables as they contain antioxidants and flavonoids. These flavonoids and antioxidants protect your hair follicles and lead to healthy hair growth.
- Supplement your diet with vitamin B comlex, vitamin C and E. Consult with your doctor for proper prescription of particular hair loss remedies or vitamins which may aid in healthy hair and scalp.
